Pianiste/tromboniste du jazz et compositeur Joseph Makholm vit et travaille à Paris depuis 1982. Il à ensiengé le piano jazz et improvisation depuis ces premiers mois dans la ville et actuellement est professeur de la composition jazz et de l'arrangement de l'histoire du jazz à la Bill Evans Piano Academy et piano jazz à la Schola Cantorum. Depuis les années 90, sa musique est ouvertement inspirée par le caractère rythmique, harmonique et formel du jazz moderne. Son "Trois Impressions pour piano seul” appartient au syllabus de l'Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music en Angleterre. Le journal britannique Classical Piano a écrit que le morceau "établie des nouveaux normes de metier dans cette domaine". Ce morceau, ainsi que ses deux compagnons, Les Trois Réflexions” et "Trois Conceptions", sont tous enregistrés par pianiste Willis Delony sur le label Centaur. Les "Trois Conceptions" étainent incluses au concert "Out of Character - Classical and Jazz Connections" donné par M Delony's à Carnegie Hall en octobre 2014. Sa "Rhapsodie pour saxophone alto et piano," créée en 2009, a été enregistré par le Duo Portejole-Lagarde sur le label Corelia. Sa "Sonate pour flûte et piano" a été enregistré en 2014 par flûtiste George Pope et pianiste Eric Charnofsky. Au printemps 2013 "Five In One (Monk's Moods),"portrait symphonique de Thelonious Monk pour 15 instruments et percussion a été créé par le Turning Point Ensemble à Vancouver, Canada. La version pour deux pianos et percussion de l'oeuvre a été jouée en mars 2015 à Louisiana State University par les pianistes Tony Caramia and Willis Delony. La collection pour piano en trois volumes “Jazz Tonic” est utilisée extensivement dans des cours en France et ailleurs. La collection parallèle “Jazzosphere”, pour clarinette ou saxophone alto, avec accompagnement piano, en trois volumes, est achevé depuis peu. Les deux ouvrages sont publiées aux Editions Billaudot à Paris. M. Makholm est souvent en représentation en petite formation - piano jazz seul, en duo et trio - et avec le Paris Jazz Repertory Quintet.
Jazz pianist/trombonist and composer Joseph Makholm has lived and worked in Paris since 1982. He has taught jazz piano and improvisation since his first months in the city and currently teaches jazz composition and arranging and jazz history at the Bill Evans Piano Academy and jazz piano at the Schola Cantorum. Since the early 1990’s, Makholm’s music has drawn increasing inspiration from the rhythmic, harmonic and formal character of jazz. His “Three Impressions for Solo Piano” is listed on the syllabus of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in the United Kingdom. The British magazine Classical Piano wrote that the piece "really sets new standards of craftsmanship in this idiom." That piece, along with its two companions, “Three Reflections” and "Three Conceptions," have all been recorded by Louisiana-based pianist Willis Delony on the Centaur label. The "Three Conceptions" were included on Mr Delony's Carnegie Hall concert "Out of Character - Classical and Jazz Connections" in October 2014. His "Rhapsodie for Alto Saxophone and Piano," premiered in 2009, has been recorded by the Duo Portejole-Lagarde on the Corelia label. The "Sonata for Flute and Piano" was recorded in 2014 by Ohio-based flutist George Pope and pianist Eric Charnofsky. In the spring of 2013 "Five In One (Monk's Moods)," a symphonic portrait of Thelonious Monk for 15 instruments and percussion was premiered by the Turning Point Ensemble in Vancouver, Canada. The two piano and percussion version of the work was performed at Louisiana State University by pianists Tony Caramia and Willis Delony. Makholm’s three-volume pedagogic collection for piano, “Jazz Tonic,” is used extensively in conservatories throughout France and abroad. A parallel collection, “Jazzosphere,” also in three volumes, for clarinet and alto saxophone, with piano accompaniment, was recently completed. Both are published by Billaudot in Paris. He performs regularly in small groups - solo jazz piano, duos and trios - and with the Paris Jazz Repertory Quintet. |
